It Made Me Laugh

For those of you who don't know, I live in Berkeley and used to work at the BPL until I left to go with Infopeople. I love my library and am so proud of them for this foray into our multimedia and interactive world. It's imbedded in the BPL website but I think you should go directly to Berkeley Public Library, An Intimate Portrait on YouTube so you can see the comments folks have left. It's a simple little video giving some useful information about the library... but... it's funny!!! I even showed it to a couple of non-library folks and they laughed.

LOLCats

I haven't done a Friday Funny in a while, so I thought I'd share LOLCats today. I've been endlessly entertained by all of the permutations of this phenomenon. Here's the deal: people take a picture of a cat (or cats) doing typical cat things like laying on a keyboard or rolling around a shelf, and put a funny caption on the image, generally using very bad grammar. And hey presto! you have an LOLCat. The purported history of LOLCats can be found here.

If these pics don't make you smile, nothing will. Enjoy! Oh, here's my first contribution and slight variation to this meme: LOLDog.

Holiday nonsense

It's the holiday season, and hopefully everyone is gearing up for some time off. To help put you in the spirit I offer you the Elfamorphosis, from OfficeMax of all places. You can upload a picture of yourself or someone you know (or just someone you want to turn into an elf), and a minute or two later you have an elfamorphosis. You can also call a toll free number and record a brief greeting that your elf sself will say as it does the happy elf dance. Here's my elfamorphosis. There's a bunch more time sink fun to be had here. The site can be a bit slow, so be patient.

Happy holidays from all of us here at Peep Central to all of you and yours. May your days be merry and bright!

Random Friday links

Want to kill a little time? Here are a couple of YouTube videos to help you. The first link is a Monty Python bit - need I say more? The second one is from a video series called Your Life's Work, a 1930's vocational guidance series. It's about ten minutes long, but is really a kick. The third one is a little video done in 1987. It's been making the rounds recently, and is very cute. Let's aerobicize!

Video fun

After a long hiatus, we return with a new edition of (drum roll, please) Friday Funnies!

This week for your listening and viewing pleasure, we present You Tube, a very cool video, uh, library of clips from all over. Anybody can contribute pretty much anything, you can vote on your favorite clips, and some of tthe stuff is hysterical! From Boing Boing, I found this awesome video of a guy playing the ukelele. I know, you're thing, "Ukelele, how exciting can that be?" Well, watch and learn! The great thing about You Tube is that one link leads to another and you end up four hours later having wasted half your day. Keyword searches are the way to go. For instance, "dogs" gets you a whole slew of funny dog videos. Here's my current favorite dog video clip. Good stuff for a Friday!

Another great time sink is Rocketboom, a tongue-in-cheek news vlog. if yyou've never heard of a vlog, it's basically a weblog that uses video for its content. Rocketboom is a faux newscast, along the lines of the Daily Show, but much shorter - each "newscast" is only three minutes long. Jump in anywhere for a taste.

Big money

Ever wondered what a $10,000 bill looks like? This Bureau of Engraiving and Priniting page shows you pics of $10,000, $5,000, $1,000 and $500 bills! All of the bills on this page haven't been issued since 1969 (which explans why, in crime shows, they always demand the ransom in $100 bills).

On the same site I found this very interesting page that has interactive Flash explanations of the changes to the $10, $20 and $50 bills. Your tax dollars at work!

How geeky are you?

I ran across this reading a hard copy of Newsweek magazine. The article referred me to the online version, which I now offer for your Friday enjoyment: How Geeky Are You? it turns out that I am seriously nerdy, not that I really needed Newsweek to help me figure that out.

And since tomorrow is April Fool's Day, here are the Top 100 April Fool's Hoaxes of All Time. Here's Number 87, Telepathic Email:

The April 1999 edition of Red Herring Magazine included an article about a revolutionary new technology that allowed users to compose and send email telepathically. The company developing this technology was Tidal Wave Communications, led by Yuri Maldini, a computer genius from Estonia. Mr. Maldini claimed that he had developed the technology from the encrypted communications systems he had helped the army put in place during the Gulf War. At the end of the article the reporter recalled a moment when he asked Mr. Maldini how big the market for such a product might be: "Mr. Maldini falls silent. He stares vacantly for several moments out his office window and then says, 'I just sent you an email with my answer.' Upon returning to our office, we find the response waiting: 'It's going to be huge,' reads the email. 'Simply huge.'" Red Herring received numerous letters from readers admitting they had been fooled by the article.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! (Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh )

I haven't done a Friday funny in a while. Life got in my way, swept me up, tossed me around some, then spit me back out on the other side. Long and short of it, I'm back with a Friday funny!

StPat42.gifFirst up: in honor of St. Patrick's Day, a quiz: Just how Irish are you? It's loaded with challenging 9to me) trivia. I got 6 out of 10 right, which makes me, well, pretty darned Irish (and my grandmother would certainly agree with that).

I found another quiz on the same topic: How Irish Are You? I scored 82% on this one (I am really rocking today on the test-taking!).

I also picked up a little Gaelic while surfing the web:

Sláinte is táinte!
[slawn-chah iss tan-chah]
(Health and wealth)

Pionta Guinness, le do thoil
[Pin-tah Guiness, le doh hull]
( A pint of Guiness, please)

Tabhair dom an rud céanna mar atá ag an fhear ar an urlár!
[Toe-er do un rudd kear-nah marr ah-ta ig un arr air un urr-lar]
(Give me the same as the man on the floor!)

Who's the monkey now?

monk-e-mail.jpgYou can be the monkey, or at least be a virtual monkey by going to careerbuilder.com (you might remember seeing their commercial during the Super Bowl) and sending monk-e-mail to friends and family (or anyone, for that matter). You have three options: type in some text then choose a monkey and a voice, record a message by microphone, choose a pre-recorded message, or call a number, enter a passcode and record yuour message over the phone (it's a toll-free number). Any way you choose, it's a total hoot, and it's free.

My personal tip: don't keep sending monk-e-mail to the same person over and over. As it happens, some people might find it annoying!

Gotta go send some more monk-e-mails now!

The Ultimate Drug Website

Drugs have been in the news a lot lately because of the Medicare drug sign-up. And, the drug ads are increasing on TV (a possible connection?). The MERD | Panexa website has taken all the promises of the various drug ads and agglomerated them into their slickly designed site. One of the better parodies.

Holiday time is here, the season when we put up tons of lights, then synchronize them to a low-power FM station....what, you've never heard of anyone doing that? Then you haven't read this article or seen this Windows Media clip.

In keeping with the time-wasting quality of this entry, here's a little Flash game to while away the time between wrapping presents, drinking eggnog, and/or decorating trees or other objects.

Take me to the liver

Courtesy of Wired News comes this great site: Greg's Science Song Music. Greg is University of Washington lecturer Greg Crowther, and he livens up his biology classes (and clearly channels his inner rock 'n roller) by setting his lessons to pop songs. Remember The Archies' Sugar, Sugar? Here's his take:

Glucose, ah sugar sugar / You are my favorite fuel from the bloodborne substrate pool / Glucose -- monosaccharide sugar -- you're sweeter than a woman's kiss / 'cause I need you for glycolysis...

You can listen to the MP3 versions here. This version of My Sharona is beyond cool. I sure wish this guy had been around when I was taking Biology! You can download PDF versions of the songs as well so you can sing along. If you want to hear more, check out his database of science songs.

What about those aluminum foil helmets?

If you ever wondered about special properties of aluminum foil, don't miss the photos included with this On the Effectiveness of Aluminium Foil Helmets: An Empirical Study study from MIT.

Here's the abstract, "Among a fringe community of paranoids, aluminum helmets serve as the protective measure of choice against invasive radio signals. We investigate the efficacy of three aluminum helmet designs on a sample group of four individuals. Using a $250,000 network analyser, we find that although on average all helmets attenuate invasive radio frequencies in either directions (either emanating from an outside source, or emanating from the cranium of the subject), certain frequencies are in fact greatly amplified. These amplified frequencies coincide with radio bands reserved for government use according to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Statistical evidence suggests the use of helmets may in fact enhance the government's invasive abilities. We speculate that the government may in fact have started the helmet craze for this reason."

For your Friday enjoyment...

Here's something for those Friday blahs. Known as Pete's Pond, National Geographic's WildCam Africa requires the latest RealPlayer plugin and a broadband connections. If you meet those requirements you're in for a treat because this live webcam is at a watering hole in Botswana. I have it running as I write this and just saw a troop of baboons playing at the water's edge as I listened to the sounds of the birds, animals, and insects. I heard about this from friends who put this on instead of TV when they go to bed at night. They say the sounds are terrifically soothing. Wow! Here comes an elephant!

A laugh riot

donkeylaughing.jpgIt's been a few weeks since I posted a Friday funny. Sorry folks, but I've been busy. I have a LIFE, okay? I don't just sit in front of a computer all day every day looking for weird and silly stuff on the Internet. I only sit in front of the computer for about eight hours every day looking for stuff. But enough of that...

On to today's topic: the laugh contest! We all know how contagious laughing can be. Well, this site is guaranteed to get you laughing too! (Be sure to turn the sound up to enjoy.)

Here's the story behind the contest:

We saw how one person's hilarious LAUGH made everyone else bust up in a mind-numbingly long line at the post office. We got to thinking... how cool it would be...and this contest was born. So... do YOU, yeah we're talking to YOU (and of course anyone YOU know) have the funniest, goofiest, most contagious laugh in America? Then, this contest is perfect! Win cash and prizes for doing the most natural feel good activity in the world. Laughing!

The Louvre is a pretty cool museum and all, but if you've ever looked up at clouds in the sky and seen the shapes of faces or animals or other objects, or looked down at your bowl of cereal and swear it looked a lot like that image of Devil's Tower in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (okay, maybe that's just me) you'll enjoy this site: the Museum of Food Anomalies! The answer to a burning question

Today's Friday Funny is in honor of the fact that it's really, really hot and cold things sound great right now.

This article from the Christian Science Monitor explains in great detail where the ingredients for banana splits come from (and for all you wiseacres out there, no the answer is NOT Baskin Robbins!). I really enjoyed the bit about marshmallows (being particularly fond of them). There really is a marsh mallow plant and once upon a time the sap was used as a thickener in the candy puffs!

I saw the link to this article in a BoingBoing entry, and there is an inaccuracy in the story that is corrected in the blog: turns out bananas originally grew in New Guinea, not Malaysia. Phew, glad we cleared THAT up!

Next week: the history of the root beer float.

Fun with birds...

And cats. Check out Bird Snatchers! It's enormous fun and a huge time-waster. Be sure to read the instructions (otherwise you and the cats may spend a good deal of time futiley sitting on the ground - I speak from experience). I kept the music on as it was very mellow and added to the zen of it all. Happy Friday everyone!

July 1, 2005

Happy birthday, America!

It's the 4th of July weekend, so it must be time to check out some cool websites (hey, other than watch fireworks and eat hot dogs, it's not like you were planning to do anything else this long weekend, right?). From the History Channel, a special Fourth of July site compiles a bunch of interesting links. Did you know, for instance, that the estimated amount of hot dogs eaten by Americans on the Fourth of July is 150 million? Whoa! And from the Wikipedia, other things that have happened on July 4 in history. And from the National Archives, check out the document that started it all, and even add your name to the Declaration of Independence!

Of course, this weekend also marks the start of the Tour de France (and without the French we might not have won the Revolutionary War, so this is sort of relevant to the whole Fourth of July thing). The race starts July 2. A couple of sites to monitor the action as Lance Armstrong goes for number seven: Outside magazine offers great online coverage. And the official site is very slick (and multi-lingual). Here in the U.S., Outdoor Life Network will be providing the blow-by-blow coverage, and they have a website to accompany the TV action.

Happy Fourth of July, everybody! Now get out there and eat some hot dogs!

It's Howdy Doody Time!

I was having a trip down trivia memory lane today, which started when I jokingly said "Sawright" and we tried to remember the name of the puppet who uttered that phrase (Pedro, voiced by Senor Wences on the Ed Sullivan Show). Next, we tried to remember the name of the puppeteer who was the voice behind Lamb Chop (it was Shari Lewis), which then led me down a road looking for info on other ventriloquists (Paul Winchell, Edgar Bergen, who you have to love as he was a RADIO ventriloquist - think about that for a sec). ANYway, eventually we came around to think about Howdy Doody, who sort of started the whole puppet thing, at least for TV. Which leads me to today's Friday funny: a trivia page for Howdy Doody. Now if you're too young to know about Howdy Doody, look on this as an opportunity to get acquainted with one of the great TV legends. Hey, he's in the Smithsonian, for pete's sake! And wait until you find out who was the Canadian Buffalo Bob!

Things to ponder on a Friday

Received via email today:

How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change a Light Bulb?
Golden Retriever
The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
Border Collie
Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
Dachshund
You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
Rottweiler
Make me.
Boxer
Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
Labrador Retriever
Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!
German Shepherd
I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.
Jack Russell Terrier
I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
English Sheep Dog
Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb...
Cocker Spaniel
Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Greyhound
It isn't moving. Who cares?
Australian Shepherd
First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
Poodle
I'll just tell the Border Collie to do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
The Cat
Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is: "How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?"
All of which proves, once again, that while dogs have masters, cats have staff!

Our dog Mia is somewhere between the Golden Retriver and the Jack Russell Terrier.

Fun with Language

Well, I just spent the last hour reading lists and I'm going to share one with you...it's called Classic Movie Lines That, Without Proper Editing, Would Not Have Been So Classic. Here's one item on the list:

I made him an offer. And though it was difficult to refuse, he wanted to mull it over. You know, discuss it with his wife and whatnot. He said he'd get back to me next Tuesday.
There are others that include some colorful language so I won't reproduce them here. But if you like old movies, you'll get a kick out of it.

There are many more lists at this site by Timothy McSweeney plus other very entertaining snippets such this example of "Rock-n-Roll Thesaurusized":

"Yesterday"
By the Beatles
In the recent past, every one of my dilemmas gave the impression of being so distantly absent.
At the present, it seems as though they're at this time to hang about....

P.S. The site is connected to 826 Valencia, a non-profit organization dedicated to working with kids 8-18 with their writing skills, particularly creative writing. 826 Valencia is part of a larger 826 National Group. Sounds like a group our libraries should be working with!

Gone to the dogs

Ever wonder what kind of dog you'd be, if you were a dog? Well, this site will help you find out! It's actually a link to a movie site, but if you click the on the left to Game, it will take you to a nifty little screen in which you must answer a series of questions about yourself. Once you are given the results, a picture of the breed will show up so you can see what you'd look like. Cool!

Oh, I'm a Munsterlander.

Keep your eyes on the road!

roadsigns.jpgHere's a fun thing to do while you're on the road: math! Check out Road Sign Math. The site is a collection of pictures of road signs with mile totals that add up to real numbers. You'll find lots of basic math (addition and subtraction), and then there is also more advanced stuff like squares. You can contribute as well - when you find a sign, take a picture of it and submit it to them. Cool! If only I were better at math. We'd be driving by the signs and I'd still be counting on my fingers, most likely saying, "wait, wait' I'm not done!" And then there's the added complication of having to take a picture as well... So maybe I'll just stick to looking at the website.

Tip o' the beanie to ResearchBuzz for the link.

New MSN search feature!

This actually came out last week in honor of April Fool's Day, but I'm offering it up as this week's funny. MSN has created a pretty cute spoof search site when you can input people's names and create a customized search results page for them, based on some stereotypical generalizations from which you can choose. For instance, I identified myself as a "Gadget Toting Internet Cubicle Geek" (unfortunately a very accurate description) and my search results included this:

Citing ridiculous work hours, O'Shea's computer calls it quits
In a case believed to be the first of its kind, Eileen O'Shea's work computer has gone on strike. "At first the cursor kept dodging around," an angry O'Shea said. "Then it started spontaneously dropping into "hibernate" mode. It's just MALINGERING"....

You can email a link to the search results to your victim(s) of choice. Fun stuff!

Neato Toledo!

Wow, Infopeople's new blog author Gail McGovern (welcome, Gail!) gave me a really good idea with her entry about the iPod Shuffle fitting well in Infopeople shirt pockets. I knew that about the iPod Shuffle (it fits great in all pockets, pretty much) - the great idea was to use her iSight camera to take a picture of herself! So here you go, a nice shot of yours truly with my iSight camera:

Oh, and Happy April Fool's Day!

Hippity-hoppity Bunny Day!

peeps in a boxIn honor of this weekend, I offer up a little tribute to one of the icons (okay, maybe I exaggerate a bit) of the modern holiday, an icon that is close to the hearts of all us Infopeople: the peep. In this tribute, I, with a little help from my friends, tested the ability of peeps to survive a microwave. Here is the story. Enjoy, and have a great weekend!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Okay, so it's only Thursday. But as it's St. Patrick's Day today, we thought it made more sense to run this funny a little early. It's a little game to amuse you (and may consume more time than you should probably spend on it): the Get the Drunk Home game! The goal is to keep our boozy friend upright and walking. The further he goes, the better you're doing. Just move your mouse to the right and the left to keep him from weaving (or falling down) too much. It's harder than it looks. Mostly, I made him collapse after three or four meters. but everyone knows I can't hold my liquor! ;-) I know - the site is in German, which isn't very Irish, but it's the spirit of the thing. Anyway, Erin go braugh!

For the tardy among us (you know who you are)

Check this out! A handy dandy citation generator service that will email all those folks who keep you cooling your heels. As a chronically on time person who has spent much of my life waiting for other people to show up, I really can appreciate this. Citations come in two flavors: kind and, uh, less than kind. Only problem I can see is overly zealous spam filters plopping the citation emails in a junk folder or just deleting it altogether. Still, it's a cute idea.

Zen

A day late, but as the topic is Zen that's okay, right?

Take a little time to experience Zen.*

*If the fly distracts you is it Zen to click?

Spend some time in a virtual museum

To be specific: spend some time in P.T. Barnum's American Museum, which burned down in 1865. This is a virtual recreation from the City University of New York. An archive of the primary documents used to build the site's content is also available. You'll need the Flash player to fully enjoy the museum.

Sappy Valentine's Day stuff

Okay, maybe not so sappy, but the headline intrigued you, didn't it? Anyway, in honor of the big day, some interesting links to inform and amuse you. Did you know over 1 billion cards are sent in the U.S. alone? And parents receive one in five of the cards sent each year. Check out this page for more factoids. Why February 14? Well, it turns out there is more than one theory about that. And from the "what were they thinking?" school of web design, check out Amore' on the Net. Anyway, happy Valentine's Day (and hopefully you'll have a better day than poor old St. Valentine, who was supposedly beheaded on that date)!

Okay, that last bit wasn't so funny. but the earlier stuff was pretty good, right?

Bubble wrap appreciation day

This is a little early, but it just gives you more time to prepare. This coming Monday, January 31, is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day! Bubble wrap, for those who are wondering, was invented in 1957 by some guys who were actually trying to make plastic wallpaper (!). Anyway, the website has many entertaining activities, including a quiz, and several bubble wrap popping sites. My personal fave is the Bubble Wrap Personality Test, which identified me as a:

"Twist & Shout Popper Unconventional, Independent - As a highly individualistic person, you desire the freedom to plot your own course. You are action-oriented and like to see immediate results for your efforts. You may consider a career as an entrepreneur, culinary chef, or safari guide."

Funny, at one point some years back, I actually did give serious consideration to a career as a safari guide but gave that idea up when I decided it would be more fun to work with Jacques Cousteau and swim with dolphins. Anyway, enjoy!

Yahoo! Picks of the Year

Each year, Yahoo! picks what they think are the ten oddest, most fun or most interesting sites of the year. Here are the 2004 entries. A few faves: Animals on the Underground, which finds the shapes of animals in London's Underground maps. And there's WordCount, a site that ranks the 86,800 most commonly used English words. I tried "whoopee" and found that it is number 53,526. "To" is number four. And the number one word is...drum roll... please: "the." Last but not least, there's David Hasselhoff Online. I have no idea why it makes the list, unless it has something to do with the spectacular(ly worthless) Flash intro that opens the site (turn your speakers down before checking it out, or you may get thrown out of your own library!). Enjoy!

Season's greetings to all!

Infopeople wishes you and yours a wonderful holiday season. We'll be taking a few days off from blog posting to enjoy some time with family and friends. Happy merry jolly!

Are you a puzzle player?

A friend sent this link to GROW to me. It's a puzzle (what is the best order for adding the pieces?). Perfect score is 20,000. There is at least one solution. If you want some mental stimulation and a lot of time, try to solve it. If you just want to know the answer, you will be able to find it some place or other on the web.

Holiday stress reliever

It's that time of year again. Our mailboxes are overflowing with catalogs, there's a Christmas tree lot on every corner, and if you're like us, you're already contemplating how you are going to fit gift shopping and holiday planning into a too busy schedule. Well, here's a handy dandy stress reliever. Bookmark the site and come back whenever you're feeling overwhelmed: virtual bubblewrap! Enjoy, and for an extra dose of fun, try the insane version (you'll need the Flash player to pop - and for the insane version, you might want to turn the sound down a bit...)! Oh, and be sure to check out bubblewrap etiquiette before you become too engrossed in popping.

Angry Alien has done it

Angry Alien has done it again with three, count 'em three, new 30 second re-enacted by bunnies productions. This time up: Freddy vs Jason, Scream, and Texas Chainsaw Massaacre. It only takes 90 seconds to see them all (and to think I worried I'd never use my math skills in real life!). Be sure to hold your mouse over the word "Begin" before playing them for an extra treat! Enjoy, and if you scare easily, watch with a buddy.

Cat Fanciers Take Note!

Due to a complete lack of industriousness on our part, there was no Infopeople Friday funny last Friday. Not that there weren't funny things out there. We're sure there were plenty. We just couldn't find them ;-( After much exhausting trolling around the web we found a pretty good one for this week.

Never let it be said we here at Infopeople aren't equal opportunity pet lovers. A while back we introduced you to Dogster where, in a few easy clicks, your favorite pooch can have a web page of its own. Well, now your favorite feline can also find reknown on the web! From the folks who brought us Dogster, it's (drum roll, please) Catster! Here's a sample (this one actually keeps a diary!!). Happy Friday!

Dog Haikus

We were wracking our brains trying to come up with a Friday Funny for today, and were about to resort to cheesy jokes, when suddenly we remembered a very funny set of haikus sent to us a while back. We offer them up now for your enjoyment: Dog Haikus! Some samples:

I love my master;
Thus I perfume myself with
This long-rotten squirrel.

I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be.

Today I sniffed
Many dog butts-I celebrate
By kissing your face.

Enjoy!

If you enjoy tongue twisters (and this entry's title is a classic - we dare you to say it ten times fast!), you'll get a kick out of the Tongue Twister Database. Try to wrap your mouth around "Unique New York" or "three twigs twined tightly." For more fun, check out the International Collection of Tongue Twisters, with tongue twisters in over 100 languages!

15 Minutes of Fame for Your Pooch

If it's Friday, it must be time for Friday Funnies! Today's entry is dogster.com. If you have a pup, they can have their very own home page at no cost! It takes a total of about five minutes to register and make a page. Just have a digital photo of your canine bud handy and you're good to go. What would we do without the Internet? We wouldn't send you off to this site unless we'd checked it out for you, so here is the Infopeople Web Manager's faithful companion's page.

What Your Computer Does in Its Free Time...

In case you ever wondered, this website answers the question, "What does my computer do when I'm not around?" Interestingly, it only tells us what Windows machines do. We bet that Apple computers are better behaved. Enjoy! Thanks to the
